How to make a bed with your own hands?

Beds, as you know, are completely different from each other, differing in materials of manufacture, sizes, and purpose.. Almost any bed made of wood can be made by yourself. Whether it is a children’s bunk bed, including the most unusual configuration, for example, in the form of a car, also an invisible or transformer bed, a bed installed on a podium, a loft bed … The list goes on. However, in any case, the classic version of the bed is taken as a basis. Therefore, we will consider a method of making a double bed made of wood, which you can make yourself.

DIY wooden bed

Dimensions (edit)

First, you need to clearly determine the size of the future bed, so it is better to know in advance what kind of mattress we are making it under. It’s easier to adjust the bed to the desired size, and not then look for a mattress in all the shops. Suppose our size is 200x150x25 cm.Now we will calculate everything necessary for the frame.

Material

wooden boards 250×30 and 2 cm high;

timber 200×4 and 4 cm high;

slats 150×4 and 2 cm high;

wood screws;

polyurethane-based varnish;

wood stain.

Preparatory work

Based on the internal size of our frame, we make board blanks. The back and front walls are 150 cm.

We divide the entire length into three equal segments. Determine the depth of the mattress in the frame. Let’s say it’s five centimeters. Now 5 cm (planting depth) add two more (the thickness of the slats) and another four centimeters (this is the thickness of the supporting beams). The total is eleven centimeters. We measure them from the upper edge of the workpiece and fasten the support bars at each division point.

The blanks for our sidewalls will be 204 cm. We measure 7 cm from the top, make a line with an upholstery cord, screwing a support bar along its entire length. Screw in all the screws from the back side.

We screw the main beams on both sides, observing the extreme indent of 2 cm in order to dock the workpieces.

Then we put an additional board on the front. We glue the ends with a special glue for wood. For strength from the back side, we glue and fasten the reinforcing bars with self-tapping screws. Round off the top edges.

We paint the workpieces in the desired color with a stain, and cover with a double layer of varnish (apply the second one after half an hour, letting the first dry out). It is better to take a quick-drying varnish on a polyurethane base..

Assembling the bed frame

Twisting the blanks together, we assemble the frame. Then we put the main support beam on the support beams. If there is no suitable (4×4) timber, use 4×2 cm slats twisted together.At an angle of 45 degrees, we will screw the main timber on both sides.

We fasten the rack jumpers to the supporting bars, at a distance of 4-5 cm.For strength, we fasten the support bars in the center (these are the legs), their height can be adjusted.

Now we will make a base on which we will put the mattress directly. To do this, you need to cut out a layer of a suitable size from plywood, cut corners, grind the ends. We mark and drill with an electric drill or a special hole saw for wood, holes in a sheet with a diameter of 45 mm, we grind everything with sandpaper.

We drill holes with chamfers around the perimeter, fasten plywood inside the bed with small screws with countersunk heads. The plywood layer, in addition to supporting the mattress, will give additional rigidity during lateral loads, prevent the bed from rocking, turning the loads sideways. In turn, ventilation will pass through the holes. Plywood should not be varnished, as this will not have the best effect on the upholstery of the mattress..

Headboard and legs of the bed

To make the headboard, we cut out a board of the required width and configuration, grind the ends, mark and drill chamfered holes. We remove small chamfers around the perimeter with a hand plane. We grind the surface with emery paper, you can make roundings on the edges.

We twist the boards with screws, prudently smearing the contact points with furniture glue. Now we will cover the back with parquet varnish (after the glue has dried) and screw it to the end board with galvanized screws.

The inner legs can be made from trim boards. To do this, carefully cut the pieces by removing small chamfers. Using a flat chisel, choosing seats in the boards, fix the legs with glue and screws.

It is recommended to impregnate the wood with varnish that is well diluted with a solvent, while the surface should not form a film. We fix the beam with corners and screw it onto the end boards with screws. We cut off the supporting bars, drill holes and screw them in place with screws. The load on the end boards will be minimal, the main one will fall on the backbone.

If you want to show your imagination, then you can do this by taking «under the gun» the color of the bed, the shape of the backs, etc. Or you can put a mattress on a brand new bed right now and use it for its intended purpose.!
